Nigerian singer, CKay has said opened up on the challenges he faced when he tried to collaborate with some of his colleagues.
He said he wanted to consolidate the global success of his hit song, āLove Nwantiti,ā but when he reached out to many musicians, they turned him down.
Ckay made the revelation in the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, where he also stated that he could not understand why āLove Nwantitiā never won any award in Nigeria despite racking over a billion streams and bagging numerous awards abroad.
The Chocolate City signee opined that there is a lot of bureaucracy involved in getting awards both domestic and foreign, and the fact that he does not know award organisers may be an issue.
He said his belief that there is love in the Nigerian music industry may not have been correct afterall especially after his disappointing experience with collaborations.
Ckay said; āI have my reservations about awards in general. Because I feel thereās so much involved. And the people who run the awards, I donāt know them or their motives. I have seen so many situations where music that is deserving doesnāt get any recognition. Not just the Grammys, even [Nigerian awards] back home.
āItās interesting that āLove Nwantitiā thatās 6x platinum, has no award in Nigeria. I donāt know if I would use the word shameful. Itās interesting because it begs so many questions. Thatās why I have my reservations about awards.
āI would like to believe that thereās a lot of love in the [Nigerian music] industry, but unfortunately, I donāt think I am correct. I feel Iām very open. I mean, Iām not open like that.
āTo be fair, I am a reserved person. But in terms of collaborations, I have had so many situations where I tried to collaborate with some people in the industry but they were acting funny even After āLove Nwantiti.’ā
