Court sentences Yahoo boy to community service over $270 fraud

A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Kubwa has sentenced one Abass Aminu Abdulkareem to community service for $270 fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) arraigned the defendant before Justice O. I. Adelaja on one count charge bordering on internet fraud.

According to the anti-graft agency, Aminu obtained the money from an American woman, Amanda by impersonating her cousin with the name, Jeremiah Lincoln on Facebook

The EFCC which broke the news of the yahoo boy’s conviction via its official Twitter account said the offence contravenes Section 321 of the Penal Code Law (Laws of the Federation, Abuja) 1990 and punishable under Section 324 of the same Law.

The charge read; “That you, Abass Aminu Abdulkareem sometime in 2023 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory cheated by personation when you represented yourself on a Facebook profile page as Jeremiah Lincoln, a citizen of the United States of America and under that name obtained the sum of Two Hundred and Seventy United States Dollars ($270) from Amanda, a cousin to Jeremiah Lincoln and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code Law (Laws of the Federation, Abuja) 1990 and punishable under Section 324 of the same Law.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

Justice Adelaja sentenced Abdulkareem to community service to be supervised by the Nigerian Correctional Service’s (NCS) Officers.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the accused on one-count charge bordering on cybercrime.

According to the anti-graft agency, the convict was arrested during a sting operation at his hideout, located on Joel Bala Street, Gbagyi Villa, Kaduna.

It said investigation revealed that Temitope operated a fake Facebook and Instagram account, where he assumed the identity of one Lisa Marie, to defraud unsuspecting victims, mostly American residents, of their hard earned money.

He was sentenced by a High Court sitting in Kaduna State on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 for defrauding victims of $400.

The charge read: “That you, Olanrewaju Temitope ‘M’, sometimes between January, 2022 and July, 2022 in Kaduna, within the Judicial Division of this Honourable Court, dishonestly induced one Elexis McCrills on Instagram, to deliver to you the sum of $400.

When you portrayed yourself to be Lisa Marie Boothe (a female which you knew you were not) and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017, and punishable under Section 309 of the Same Law.”

The yahoo boy pleaded guilty to the charge, and the presiding judge sentenced him to five years imprisonment, with an option to pay N100,000 as fine.
