Abaribe urges Tinubu’s government to release Nnamdi Kanu following Supreme Court judgment

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has said President Bola Tinubu’s administration can still release leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for the sake of national unity.

The lawmaker representing Abia South stated this in reaction to Friday’s Supreme Court judgment that upheld the continued detention of Kanu.

In a statement by his Media Adviser, Uchenna Awom, the former Minority Leader described the ruling against the IPOB leader as unfortunate.

Abaribe said: “This current Federal Government will do something very fast to release Nnamdi Kanu, if for no other reason, but for national cohesion and unity of the country.

“As Leaders, we shall continue to press for a solution that will be the best in the circumstance.”

Justice Emmanuel Agim of the Supreme Court declined to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, from detention.

The apex court, Dec 15, 2023 voided and set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal in October 2022, which ordered Kanu’s release and quashed the terrorism charges against him.

The Supreme Court held that although the Nigerian government recklessly and unlawfully rendered Kanu from Kenya, such an unlawful act has not divested any court from proceeding with trial.

Agim subsequently ordered that Kanu should go and defend himself in the remaining 7 counts of terrorism charges against him.
