Nigeria defender, William Troost-Ekong has expressed surprise over coach Jose Peseiro’s decision to not call him to join his Super Eagles teammates.
The 30-year-old has been omitted from the national team since the Eagles 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe in September.
Troost-EKong’s international future remains uncertain, as he is now set to be excluded from Nigeria’s squad for the 2023 AFCON finals starting next January in Cote d’Ivoire.
The 30-year-old told Socernet that he is yet to retire from international football and that he is still available for selection.
He said; “No, I haven’t retired from international football. I think it’s too early for me to make that decision. I’m still very willing, and yes, supporting the team. I’ve been following the games like always. I think I have been part of the squad for like eight years now.
“It has been a bit of a surprise for me. But the best I can do is to work hard in my club. I think I am showing that I can still be of great help for the team. Yeah, we will see what happens with AFCON. But I’m still very willing, and I want the best for Nigeria.”
Peseiro has already submitted his provisional list for the biennial competition. A final 27-man list is expected to be submitted to the Confederation of African Football, CAF, by January 7, 2023.
