NFF appoints Finidi George as Super Eagles head coach

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, have appointed Finidi George as the new head coach of Super Eagles, replacing Jose Peseiro who exited in March.

NFF made the important announcement on Monday, April 29, 2024 weeks after he took charge of the squad in an interim capacity.

George spent 20 months as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro before the Portuguese voluntarily left the post following the accomplishment of 2023 Africa Cup of Nations runner-up position in Cote d’Ivoire.

His immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan.

It may be recalled that Finidi George earlier stated that he was not losing any sleep over getting the national team’s coaching job on a permanent basis.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, had declared the position of the head coach vacant in an advertisement on its website, calling for applications with a March 13 deadline.

It noted in the advertorial that the prospective Eagles coach “must have proven experience at the elite level of football.”

The 52-year-old, who applied for the job, had an interview with Modo TV, where he aid he was not desperate for the job permanently.

Finidi said; “I felt really good when I was told to take charge of the team. I have been with the team for almost two years, I know all the players, their strengths, and their weaknesses but I am only here to serve Nigeria the way I know how to do stuff.

“I will just take these two games and go back to my club. Whatever the decision is taken after, so be it. I’m not under pressure to say I must get the role permanently.”
