Wizkid’s statement about Afrobeats misunderstood – Joeboy

Afropop singer, Joeboy is of the opinion that the recent comment by Ayodeji “Wizkid” Balogun regarding Afrobeats was taken out of context.

It may be recalled that Wizkid recently issued a public notice that he does not want to be addressed or acknowledged as an Afrobeats artiste.

The Starboy Entertainment founder stated this on Friday, 15th of March while announcing that his next album was complete and ready to be released.

Wizkid warn bloggers

Wizkid warned fans not to expect an old version or Afrobeats sound on the album which will be titled Morayo, after his late mother.

In a series of online rant, he urged fans who are looking forward to hearing the old Wizkid, to not bother downloading his new project and delete him from their playlist.

Furthermore, Machala as he is fondly called, warned bloggers and other media outfits not to post his album or report details about it when he finally releases Morayo.

Wiz had written; “Album done! See you soon b*tches! And abeg if you like Pakurumo Wizkid, don’t download this new album. In fact, delete me from your playlist and your life!

“If you like Afrobeats, don’t download my album. I’m not a f*cking Afrobeats artiste. I am not Afro anything.”

Reacting in an episode of Cool FM’s Big Friday Day Show hosted by Tacha, Joeboy insisted that Wizkid was misunderstood. He said that contrary to belief, the ‘Joro’ crooner wasn’t ditching Afrobeats, but just didn’t want to be boxed in the genre.

He said; “Wizkid’s statement is being misunderstood, he is not running away from Afrobeats. All we are saying is our identity is Afrobeats but please don’t box us because we can make other genres of music too.”
