What have senators done for the average Nigerian in the last 50 years – Basketmouth queries

Ace comedian and actor, Bright Okpocha otherwise known as Basketmouth has raised questions over the role of the Nigerian senate in the life of the average citizen.

He asked what Senators have done to favour the masses in the last 50 years that aside from padding the budgets to enrich themselves.

Basketmouth’s query is coming amid the allegations by Bauchi Central Senator, Abdul Ningi, that the Senate padded the 2024 appropriation bill to the tune of N3.7 trillion.

Also, the lawmaker representing Cross River North, Agom Jarigbe, claied during plenary on Tuesday that ranking Senators got N500 million each from the 2024 budget.

Reacting to the development, Basketmouth took to his social media asked; “I’ve got a question… Aside padding budgets, what else do our senators do? Like….what have they done in the past 50yrs that favored the average Nigerian?”

A presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last general elections, Omoyele Sowore, has called for the scrapping of the Nigerian senate.

Sowore criticised the National Assembly for failure to live up to its legislative responsibilities. He said the Senate in particular, has become a coven and retirement home for liars and corrupt former governors.

He said the bi-cameral legislative system needs to be abolished as both chmbers have become retirement home for chronic liars.

Taking to Twitter, Sowore suggested a unicameral legislature with no more than 100 representatives working part-time.

He wrote: “It’s time we seriously move to abolish the bi-cameral legislative system, especially the @NGRSenate, which has always been a coven of thieves; it is the retirement home of chronic liars, never-do-wells, and corrupt former governors in Nigeria. We need a unicameral legislative arm with no more than 100 part-time lawmakers. #RevolutionNow.”
