Unpaid intern doctor collapses after 72-hour shift in Rivers

A medical doctor, who has reportedly not been paid for three months, collapsed after a working a 72-hour shift.

Dr Okorie Ifeanyi Venatus is an intern doctor at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, Rivers State.

According to a medical doctor @DrPenking who shared Okorie’s story, intern doctors across Nigeria have not been paid since December 2020.

Despite not being paid, Dr Okorie has been working as the only House Officer in the unit, sadly he collapsed after working for 3 days stretch. He was then admitted at the hospital.

@Drpenking’s tweet reads in part:

”This is Dr Okorie Ifeanyi Venatus,an intern Doctor in UPTH. He collapsed with his forehead to the ground after a 72 hour shift as the only House Officer in the unit.

He and other intern Doctors all over Nigeria have not been paid for 3 months now (Since December 2020).”
