Nigerian chess champion, Tunde Onakoya, has surpassed the previous Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.
The techpreneur and game master celebrated via his Twitter page on Saturday after he reached the 58 hours mark he had set in order to become the new record holder.
He also expressed the determination to push the record to 60 hours to enable him accomplish the fundraising goal for the education of underprivileged African children around the world.
The previous record of 56 hours and 9 minutes was set by Norwegian players, but Tunde beat it on Saturday, April 20 at the iconic Times Square in New York.
Sharing an image on his page, Onakoya wrote; “WE HAVE DONE IT. #LongestChessMarathon #58Hours #RecordBroken #NewRecordSet”
He added; “We’re pushing to 60 hours guys. We’re not stopping yet. Let’s keep going. We have a fundraising goal to meet for the education of African children around the world.
This is our why – the reason we are doing this. Let’s demonstrate to the world the incredible power of love. Together, we can make this happen.”
Meanwhile, CorrectNG reported earlier that Afrobeats singers, Davido and Adekunle Gold turned up in New York to drum support for Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya, during the chess marathon.
Tunde commenced his mission to break the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon at Times Square in New York, on Wednesday, April 17.
Onakoya’s chess marathon was scheduled to end on April 19, however, he chose to extend it to 20th of April after taking a few breaks for health reasons and also to push his charitable cause.
