Top 20 churches in Nigeria, their founders, and the year they were founded

According to research, Nigeria has the highest number of churches in the world. Nigeria has a very high number of established churches and many more are springing up every day. These churches have their branches in various parts of of the country.  In this post, we shall be discussing the top 20 churches in Nigeria, their founders and founding year.

20. Royal House of Grace International Church

Founded in 1992 by Apostle Zilly Aggrey with King David Zilly Aggrey as the General Overseer. The headquarters of this church is in Port Harcourt and it has grown to be a major church in Nigeria.

19. Nigerian Baptist Convention

Founded in 1850. by the Southern Baptist Convent missionaries. This is the second largest Baptist convention that is affiliated with the Baptist World Alliance and it is among the largest church in Nigeria.

The headquarters of this church is located in Ibadan. The church has many conferences in Nigeria and runs many bookstores across the country.

18. Celestial Church of Christ

Founded in 1947 with Samuel Bilehou as the General Overseer. This is an African Church founded in Port- Novo Benin. The church spread through the French West Africa that became independent from where it spread down to Nigeria and is now among the major churches in Nigeria.

17. The Lord’ Chosen

Founded by Lazarus Muoka in 2002. This massive church broke out from the Catholic Church and has its headquarters in Lagos. The church started with a few people and now it has up to 300000 branches all over the word.

16. Salvation Ministries

Founded in 1997 by David Ibiyeomie with David Ibiyeomie as the General Overseer. Salvation Ministries has its headquarters in Port Harcourt. The church features a television ministry which began in 2001.

The church runs a training college called the Word Of Life Bible Institute and this began few months after the inception of the church. The church is now among the major Nigerian churches.

15. Methodist Church of Nigeria

Founded in 1842 by the British missionaries with Prelate Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu. This church was developed from Wesleyan Methodist. The church originally began in England before coming to Nigeria and it is now one of the major churches in Nigeria.

14. The Christ Apostolic Church

Founded in 1941 by Joseph Ayo Babalola with Pastor A.O Akinosun as the General Overseer. This church is known to be the first Aladura Pentecostal Church that is present in Nigeria including other countries.

It began in the first half of the 20th century and was formally formed in 1941. In this church there are many factions with many different leaders. This church is among the largest church in Nigeria.

13. Cherubim and Seraphim

Founded by Moses Orimolade Tuno in 1925. Cherubim and Seraphim is another large church in Nigeria. It is also one of the oldest church in Nigeria. However many new churches formed now broke out of this very Cherubim and Seraphim.

12. Fountain of Life Church

Founded by Dr Bimbo Odukoye.This church is among the largest in Nigeria and it focuses on the single and married. The Fountain of Life Church in Nigeria is known for its dense population.

11. Synagogue Church of nations

Founded by T.B Joshua who is also the General Overseer. Due to his miracles and healing, he is among the most famous pastors in the world. He is also the owner of Emmanuel TV

10. Daystar Christian Center

Founded by Samuel Adeyemi. This Pastor believes in bringing up leaders in Christ. The founder of this church is not just a pastor but he also engages in motivational speaking. The church is one of the churches in Nigeria with the largest auditorium.

9. The Commonwealth of Zion Assembly

Another name for this church is the Coza ministry and it was founded in the year 1999 by Reverend Biodun Fatoyinbo. This church has been recording some tremendous growth with increasing members.

8. Deeper Life Christian Ministry

Ffounded by William. F. Kumuyi in 1982. This is one of the most famous church found in Nigeria and it is also one of the oldest churches in Nigeria and it started with 15 person in 1973. However now, it is among the biggest and the most reputable churches in Nigeria.

7. The Apostolic Church

Founded in 1931 by Gabriel Olutol. This is the fourth largest church in Nigeria and it is one of the oldest in Nigeria with many branches across Nigeria with many branches across Nigeria.

The location of the church auditorium is in Lagos and it can contain up to 100000 people at once. However the headquarters of this church is still under construction.

6. Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry

Founded in 1989 by Dr Daniel Olukoye. This church has an auditorium with a human capacity of about 550000 persons during their programmes.

5. Christ Embassy

Founded in 1990 by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. The General Overseer of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome is one of the richest pastors in the world. There are many branches of the church in Nigeria and its headquarters are found in Lagos

4. Living Faith Church Worldwide

Founded in 1981 with Bishop David Oyedepo as the General Overseer. This church also known as Winners Chapel International is among the largest today. Its headquarters are found in Ota, Ogun State Nigeria and it can contain up to 250000 people in one sitting.

There was a time it was labelled as the biggest church in the world by the Guinness Book of Records.

3. The Redeemed Christian Church of God

Fformed in 1952 by Rev Josiah Akindayomi with Pastor Enoch Adeboye as the General Overseer. The Redeemed Christian Church of God has the highest population in Nigeria as far as Pentecostal churches are concerned.

It also possess the largest auditorium in Nigeria which can contact its members during their well known crusade across the Lagos Ibadan Expressway

2. The Church Of Nigeria, Anglican Communion

Ooriginated from the Church of England. this is the second- largest province that exists in the Anglican Communion and it has a current membership of up to 18 million out of the total Nigerian population.

From 2002, the Church of Nigeria have been getting an increase in the number of bishops and dioceses and the administrative headquarters are located in Abuja.

The Catholic Church is among the largest church in Nigeria with many branches in almost every town in Nigeria. The Catholic Church has it’s headquarters in Rome and has many branches across the world. The Catholic Church is among the leading churches in Nigeria.

    U tried bro, but where is Assemblies of God Nigeria? Where is Watchman? Where is Seventh Day Adventist Church? Where is Assemblies of the Believers Church(ABC)? these are denominations that have massive presence in Nigeria more than some of the churches u listed. Pls check ur facts and tell us the criteria u used to arrive at ur conclusion.

    Don’t know how you came about this rating, in ideal settings criteria for ratings are made known:
    church membership strength
    global outreach
    date of incorporation
    online presence etc.
    This is done so that people who may be better informed will throw in their statistics to counter anyone perceived not to be authentic.

      the author doesn’t know about the churches in the northern part of Nigeria like Ecwa and EYN that are the most populous and olders churches in Nigeria which started in 1923. pls varify your claim
