According to research, Nigeria has the highest number of churches in the world. Nigeria has a very high number of established churches and many more are springing up every day. These churches have their branches in various parts of of the country.  In this post, we shall be discussing the top 20 churches in Nigeria, their founders and founding year.

20. Royal House of Grace International Church

Founded in 1992 by Apostle Zilly Aggrey with King David Zilly Aggrey as the General Overseer. The headquarters of this church is in Port Harcourt and it has grown to be a major church in Nigeria.

19. Nigerian Baptist Convention

Founded in 1850. by the Southern Baptist Convent missionaries. This is the second largest Baptist convention that is affiliated with the Baptist World Alliance and it is among the largest church in Nigeria.

Founded in 1842 by the British missionaries with Prelate Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu. This church was developed from Wesleyan Methodist. The church originally began in England before coming to Nigeria and it is now one of the major churches in Nigeria.

Founded in 1941 by Joseph Ayo Babalola with Pastor A.O Akinosun as the General Overseer. This church is known to be the first Aladura Pentecostal Church that is present in Nigeria including other countries.

Founded by Moses Orimolade Tuno in 1925. Cherubim and Seraphim is another large church in Nigeria. It is also one of the oldest church in Nigeria. However many new churches formed now broke out of this very Cherubim and Seraphim.

Another name for this church is the Coza ministry and it was founded in the year 1999 by Reverend Biodun Fatoyinbo. This church has been recording some tremendous growth with increasing members.

7. The Apostolic Church

Founded in 1931 by Gabriel Olutol. This is the fourth largest church in Nigeria and it is one of the oldest in Nigeria with many branches across Nigeria with many branches across Nigeria.

The location of the church auditorium is in Lagos and it can contain up to 100000 people at once. However the headquarters of this church is still under construction.

6. Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry

Founded in 1989 by Dr Daniel Olukoye. This church has an auditorium with a human capacity of about 550000 persons during their programmes.

Founded in 1990 by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. The General Overseer of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome is one of the richest pastors in the world. There are many branches of the church in Nigeria and its headquarters are found in Lagos

Founded in 1981 with Bishop David Oyedepo as the General Overseer. This church also known as Winners Chapel International is among the largest today. Its headquarters are found in Ota, Ogun State Nigeria and it can contain up to 250000 people in one sitting.

There was a time it was labelled as the biggest church in the world by the Guinness Book of Records.

3. The Redeemed Christian Church of God

Fformed in 1952 by Rev Josiah Akindayomi with Pastor Enoch Adeboye as the General Overseer. The Redeemed Christian Church of God has the highest population in Nigeria as far as Pentecostal churches are concerned.

Ooriginated from the Church of England. this is the second- largest province that exists in the Anglican Communion and it has a current membership of up to 18 million out of the total Nigerian population.
