If you cannot afford the huge tuition to study in private universities like Babcock, Covenant and the rest, you can opt to study in low tuition federal universities in Nigeria.

The list of institutions you will find below contains only alma mater with ‘federal university’ status. All selected universities are included in a particular order, in the order of decreasing tuition.

The prices are average for the university, but it is important to note that different faculties and departments within the same institution can be priced differently. In addition, we take into consideration only school fees for first-year students, and there can be differences in the school fees for level 100 (1st year), 200 (2nd year), 300 (3rd year) etc. In other words, the choices below are estimates, and you are highly advised to double check the admission fees for the faculty you are interested to attend.

10. UNIPORT

Existing since 1975, the University of Port-Harcourt is more expensive than other federal institutions we have listed above. It is expensive for freshmen but becomes more affordable for students who continue their education through second, third year etc.

Nigerians can choose one of the 10 departments here and study management, dentistry, agriculture, humanities, and other sciences along with engineering here. School fees for new students range from 92,000 Naira to 127,000 Naira while returning students can only pay 45,000 Naira.

9. ANIABUJA

Studying in the capital of the country is prestigious and attractive. Who doesn’t want to go to Abuja and attend local institutions? For example, the federal University of Abuja is a great place to attend ever since 1988. You can proudly study law, veterinary medicine, sciences, engineering, management, and other disciplines.
The fees range from 39,000 to 42,000 Naira.

8. FUDMA

Fans of the newest schools and institutions can choose Federal University Dutsin-Ma that exists since 2011. It offers 8 departments and opportunity to study modern technology, sciences, engineering, management, art, and other popular courses.
School fees are 37,000-47,000 Naira.

7. UI

Those who dream to study in Ibadan should consider UI (University of Ibadan) as their main choice of studies. This is a great place (founded back in 1948) to study medicine and related sciences, art, agriculture, and other disciplines. The school fee is around 34,000-46,000 Naira.

6. NOUN

This is probably the biggest institution in Nigeria based on how many students study here. The National Open University of Nigeria has so many disciplines (over 700) that you can definitely find something to your taste. It has several educational centers and interesting programs for all candidates.
Since all the disciplines are officially allowed by NUC commission, you are safe to choose your future profession based on your dreams and desires.
The school fees are 33,000-41,000 Naira.

5. FUNAAB

Is your dream to work in the agricultural sector? You can study this sphere professionally in Ogun State. Here you can attend the Federal University of Agriculture that exists since 1988. FUNAAB is one of the 3 agricultural institutions in Nigeria. This is where you can focus on agriculture and its specific disciplines.
Their school fees are 32,000-42,000 Naira.

4. UDUSOK

Existing since 1975, this higher educational institution keeps attracting Nigerians. Candidates can select Usmanu Danfodiyo University as their alma mater because of the big selection of departments and courses. For example, you can become a specialist in nursing, accounting, education, biochemistry, and other sciences, economics and many other spheres.
The school fees are 30,000-53,000 Naira.

3. UNICAL

This institution was founded over 40 years ago. It can be a nice choice for studying agricultural disciplines, marketing, technical courses, science, and many other interesting and valuable courses. The fees are around 30,000-42,000 Naira.

2. BUK

Are you a citizen of Kano State? You can study at local Bayero University that exists since 1977. There are many interesting faculties here. Students are welcome to gain professional knowledge in management, modern technologies, law and such popular spheres as engineering, computer science, and medicine.
Their admission fees are 29,000-40,000 Naira.

1. ABU

Citizens who live in Kaduna area or wish to study in Zaria or Samaru can look at ABU institution (full title is Ahmadu Bello University). It has an impressive history (ABU exists since 1962) and high rankings among students and graduates. This might not be the cheapest place to get an education, but it still an affordable federal university. Its fees are around 25,000-45,000 Naira. Here you can become an engineer, scientist, teacher, artist etc.

    I am currently studying in Micheal okpara university, please parents don’t send your children here because this is one of the private federal university so far. you know what I mean, use your head thank you.

    Who compiled this foolish list.I graduated from uniben and even their returning students sch fees for science related courses is still 14,400. Are you doing this write up to defraud your parents nii.

      You are correct. It’s a fake news.FUT minna where I finished from 2008/2009 set though I rounded up due to ASU strike, from 200L to 500L, I can not remember paying more than 25K. Infact the SUG of my school fought then and it was reduced to I think either 21,500 or 22,500

    Federal polytechnic Nekede, owerri is too expensive. School fees around #40,000 and acceptance fee #30,000. This is too much for a Federal polytechnic in Nigeria restricting students from acquiring education because of high payments levied on them. I urge the federal government to look into this issues because the students in the institution are dying silently, no one to speak for them. The students are trying to avoid the riot of 2010 not to repeat again. May God have mercies on the management of the school cos God is watching them… 🙏🙏🙏

      Micheal okpara university is a federal university but dere acceptance is 50 as a fresher u need to hold up to 170 before u can study the federal government should intevene
