Seun Kuti arrested over assault video

Popular Afrobeats musician, Seun Kuti, on Monday, turned himself in to the Lagos state police following his assault of an officer.

He earlier visited the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa regarding a viral assault video, according to SaharaReporters.

This is in line with a promise the son of music legend, Fela Kuti made that he would cooperate with the police.

Lagos Police PRO, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement, said Seun was placed under arrest after he arrived at the headquarters in Ikeja.

He said; “Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest in line with the law.

The Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved.”

A video which trended online On Saturday evening, captured Seun slapping an officer on the road after what seemed to be an accident.

The artiste’s car was bashed, so he approached the security personnel in an aggressive manner and questioned his mental state.

A source disclosed that Seun was accompanied by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika to the Commissioner’s office.

The source said; “Seun Kuti and a senior lawyer, Olumide Fusika have gone to see the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, they’re there now”.

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba had ordered the immediate arrest of , Seun Kuti over the assault.

This was made known by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a terse statement on Saturday, May 13 titled ‘Serious assault on police officer: IGP condemns act, orders immediate arrest of Seun Kuti’

The IGP directed the Commissioner of Police in Lagos state to arrest Seun and launch a speedy investigation into the cause of the assault.

The statement said; “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.

The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.

IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.”

Meanwhile, Seun earlier said he would give the police full cooperation to uncover who is wrong.

“I welcome the investigation and will give my full cooperation! I also pray to the IG that whoever is wrong should be indicted,” the musician said on Instastory.
