Security guard sentenced to 12 months in prison for stealing

A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja has sentenced a security guard, Kabiru Yunusa, to 12 months imprisonment for stealing two power generators.

The prosecution counsel, Stanley Nwaforaku, told the court that the complainant, Oluruwuju Toyin of Finest Event 7, Catherina Street, Zone 7, Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, apprehended the convict in the act.

According to the prosecutor, after Mr Toyin apprehended Yunusa, he brought him to the Durumi divisional police station on December 26.

The prosecutor told the court that, on December 23, the complainant contracted the convict, as a security guard, to secure decorations and generators at Area 1 Roundabout.

He said the convict stole two generators valued at N670, 000 that were used in powering the decorations. The prosecutor said Yunusa ran to an unknown destination, but the complainant later caught him and dragged him to the station.

He said that during police interrogation and investigation, the convict confessed to the crime and the generators were recovered from him. Nwaforaku said the offence contravened Section 289 of the Penal Code.

The judge, Aliyu Kagarko convicted the 32-year-old suspect on Thursday, December 28 after he pleaded guilty to theft and begged for leniency. He, however, gave Yunusa an option of N50,000 fine and warned him to desist from crime.
