Rema becomes first African artiste to perform at Ballon d’Or [Video]

Nigerian singer, Divine Ikubor professionally known as Rema delivered a thrilling performance at the 2023 Ballon d’Or award on Monday night.

His show-stopping performance of the chart-topping track “Calm Down” left the football stars in the audience captivated by his performance.

Notably, Rema’s appearance marked a historic moment as he became the very first African artiste to perform at the prestigious Ballon d’Or awards.

The 23-year-old was invited to perform after Manchester City won the prize for Club of the Season. Rema stepped off the stage to shake hands with the many football stars sitting in the front row including Erling Haaland and Vinicius Jr.

Meanwhile, Argentina captain, Lionel Messi won the 2023 Ballon d’Or awards, making it a record eighth time in his career.

Messi clinched the award three times more than anyone else, in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 and now (2023).

In his acceptance speech, the 36-year-old said: “Thank you very much, to share this with my national team-mates for what we were able to achieve with the national team.

“The entire group, the coaching staff, everyone involved. I’m delighted to be here once more to be able to enjoy this moment one more time.

“To be able to win the World Cup and really achieve my dream, to share this with all those who were involved.”
