Police arrest cleaner for stealing laptop in Lagos

One Kemi Salawu, a cleaner at the Yaba College of Technology, has been arrested for allegedly stealing an HP laptop belonging to her boss.

The Lagos state police command arraigned her before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court on Monday, May 22 on one count of theft.

The laptop valued at N633,700 was said to have been declared missing by her boss, Femi Fadaru after she cleaned his office and left.

The prosecutor, Chekwube Okey, holding a brief for Haruna Magaji, told the court that the complainant gave the defendant the key to his office and asked her to clean the office and return the key, but she allegedly stole the laptop after cleaning the office.

Okey said defendant committed the offence on April 26, 2023, at the YABATECH premises.

The charge sheet read in part; “That you, Kemi Salawu, on April 26, 2023, around 8am at YABATECH premises in the Lagos Magisterial District did steal one HP laptop valued at N633, 700, property of one Femi Faduru, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 280(1) and punishable under Section 287 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate O.Y. Adefope granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000.

He adjourned the case till June 14, 2023.
