Napoli caretaker coach, Francesco Calzona has expressed optimism that star striker, Victor Osimhen will get back in top shape soon.
The 25-year-old Nigeria international scored for the second consecutive game in Napoli’s 1-1 draw with Cagliari on Sunday night. Osimhen returned to Napoli two weeks ago after spending over 3 weeks representing his country during the Africa Cup of Nations.
He scored in the new caretaker coach’s first game against Barcelona last week, but fans were expecting more goals from him.
Calzona who replaced Walter Mazzarri few days ago, told DAZN via Football Italia that Osimhen is still trying to recover from AFCON.
“He was only tired. Victor is a fantastic guy. He scored two goals in two matches and will slowly get back in shape.
“Don’t forget he played at AFCON. Players are devastated when they return. He was tired also against Barcelona, but players always want to stay on the pitch,” he said.
Osimhen has scored eight goals in 14 league appearances for Napoli this season. He has also scored one goal in five appearances in the UEFA Champions League.
