Ooni visits ex-CBN governor, Emefiele in prison

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has paid a courtesy visit to former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele at the Kuje Maximum Security Prison in Abuja.

According to Daily Post, a prison source disclosed that the traditional ruler visited on two occasions on Tuesday, 5th of December, 2023.

The source said the Ooni had visited the facility in the afternoon and also returned to the correctional centre some hours later.

It was gathered that on both occasions, the monarch had long discussions with the embattled former CBN governor.

Following the discussions, the monarch called for the release of Emefiele, who is still behind bars due to his inability to meet the terms of the N300 million bail imposed on him by a court.

Meanwhile, owing to his inability to meet the bail condition, Emefiele will be staying in the correctional centre until 2024.

CorrectNG recalls that a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama granted bail to the former CBN boss in the sum of N300 million and two sureties in like sum.

Justice Hamza Muazu, in a ruling, held that Emefiele should produce two sureties, who must have landed property in the Maitama District of the FCT.

The judgment came two weeks after another FCT High Court ordered his release in a fundamental human rights suit he instituted against the federal government.

The court adjourned till November 28 for the commencement of trial.
