Nigeria’s name, flag should also be changed – Ozekhome on national anthem

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mike Ozekhome, has described the decision by Federal Government and National Assembly to return Nigeria to its old national anthem as a welcome development.

The rights activist while peaking at a press conference on Wednesday, said the change of the national anthem was long overdue as he called for more changes.

Ozekhome said though it is coming 10 years after he moved a motion for it at the 2014 National Conference, he was elated by Nigeria’s return to the old national anthem.

He said; “Bringing the old National Anthem back is well overdue. It has better lyrics in content and context, like the Senate President said. It is better than the other one. The name Nigeria and the flag should also be changed.”

CorrectNG reported earlier today that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed into law a bill for the reversion to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee”.

This was made known by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio during plenary at a joint session of the National Assembly marking the Silver Jubilee Of Nigeria’s 4th Republic.

President Tinubu’s assent of the National Anthem Bill 2024 coincided with the first anniversary of his administration, which began in May 2023.

“This morning, Mr President signed into an Act of Parliament, the newly passed National Anthem 2024,” Akpabio said on Wednesday.

He said the sitting was primarily to launch the new national anthem, and disclosed that the President would not be making a speech because he has to leave to launch the Abuja metro line.
