2019 was a year replete with bad news for Nigeria. From insecurity, to recession and even elections that were dubbed the worst in Nigeria’s history.
2020 appears to have taken a different turn however. In a recently released report,Nigeria has overtaken Egypt as the largest rice producer in Africa. Nigeria now produces 8 million tonnes out of the Africa average of 14.6 million tonnes of rice annually.
Egypt used to produce 4.3 tonnes annually but suffered a decline of almost 40 percent in the last one year.
Nigeria has been making steady investments in the agricultural sector over the last few years and the efforts appear to be finally bearing fruit.
The news was immediately tweeted by government spokesman, Bashir Ahmaad who was eager to claim it as a success for the Buhari Administration.
