In one of my previous article, I talked about the largest malls in Nigeria; today I will be sharing with you the largest shopping malls in Africa.

Gone are those days Africa was seen as an underdeveloped and ‘no well to do’ continent. Now we see that huge steps have been taken to make Africa a modernized continent including the construction of world-class shopping malls. No doubt, these shopping malls have attracted different companies and brands worldwide. Let’s take a look at the largest shopping malls in Africa.

1. The Mall of Arabia

The mall of Arabia is ranked as the largest mall in Africa and occupies a total of 276,000 square meters. This mall is located in Cairo, Egypt and owned by a Saudi Organization called Fawaz Al Hokair. The mall has a parking space for 9,000 cars; a total of 12 entrances. It houses luxurious hotels and modern cinema complex; international gyms, casinos and shops filled with global products.

This large mall located in Umhlanga, Durban, South Africa was built between March 3, 1998, and September 2001 by Old Mutual Properties. The mall occupies a total of 220,000 Square meters and has 12,000 parking centres. It is worthy to note that close to 2 million people visit the store monthly. Yet another large mall in Africa is the Canal Walk mall located in Cape Town in South Africa. The mall was opened in the year 2000 and occupies 141,000 square meters and has over 400 outlets with a wide selection of household, luxurious products as well as jewellery. The mall is surrounded by a vast population of people that lives in over 300 luxurious homes. Tourists can enjoy a clear view of the Table Mountains and the famous Robben Island in the Canal Walk mall.

Occupying a total of 131,000 square meters with 6,500 parking spaces, the Mall of Africa happens to be in the list of one of the largest malls in Africa. This mall is located in Waterfall city, Midrand, Gauteng. The mall is owned by the Atterbury Property group and has a magnificent hotel overlooking the Waterfall City Park.

5. Sandton City

Opened in the year 1973, Sandton City is one of the largest malls in Africa occupying 128,000 square meters with over 300 stores. The mall is owned by the Pareto Ltd and Liberty Holdings Limited. This mall is rated Africa’s most prestigious mall. The outstanding tourist attraction in Sandton City is the Nelson Mandela Square.

6. The Two Rivers Mall

Located in Nairobi, Kenya, the Two Rivers Mall occupies a total of 65,000 square meters with modern residential houses, world-class hotels, and a 3,600-seat amphitheatre. The mall was opened in the year 2017 and recognized as the largest mall in Central and East Africa.

These malls are made of world-class architectures that attracts tourists from across the world as well as bringing products closer to the people of Africa. These malls have improved the living standard and made investors tap from the growing economy in Africa. Malls are gradually becoming the centre of attraction in Africa.
