I’ve made elections difficult to rig, Nigerians now free to vote for any party – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration has made it difficult for future elections to be rigged in Nigeria.

A statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, said the president stated this while hosting West African Elders Forum Pre-Election Mediation Mission, led by former Sierra Leonean President, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma at the State House, Abuja.

Buhari also said Nigerians are now free to vote for whatever political party or whichever candidate they want in 2023.

He restated that the 2023 general elections would be free, fair and credible, as manipulations would not be allowed in any form.

The statement was titled “President Buhari to West African Elders: our election will be free, fair, credible.”

Buhari expressed thanks to his guests for their service to the sub-region as he cited the off-season elections held in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun States, as pointers to the Nigerian Government’s readiness to allow people to elect leaders of their choice.

He said; “Thank you for accepting to do this service for our sub-region.

“That right is a guarantee. We are settling down, and making progress. People should vote whoever they want, in whatever party. We shall not allow anyone to use money and thugs to intimidate the people.

Nigerians know better now, they are wiser, and know that it is better to dialogue than to carry weapons. Elections are even more difficult to rig now.”

The team lad by former President Koroma comprised of former Vice President of The Gambia, Fatoumata Tambajang; former Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas and Executive Director of Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Ann Iyonu.

Koroma said they had met with stakeholders across political parties, civil society, and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
