It’s quite sad that average Nigerians can’t speak their native language – BBNaija’s Dotun

Big Brother Naija ‘Level Up’ star, Dotun Oloniyo has expressed disappointment over the diminishing knowledge of Nigerian culture among the young population.

He decried the fact that there are Nigerians who cannot speak their native language or mothe tongue yet they do not see anything wrong with it.

In a recent statement, Dotun asserted that the primary reason many youths are not familiar with their own culture is due to the overwhelming influence of Western culture.

He, however, admitted that he somewhat falls into the categoy of those that can’t speak Yoruba, but added that he is better because he can speak to an extent.

The reality star advised young people not to abandon their roots while embracing that of the western world because their culture is what makes them Nigerians.

He said; “An average Nigerian probably doesn’t know how to speak their native language which is quite sad. Even as easy as Yoruba is, some people can’t speak it.

I might be guilty as well but at least I can speak to an extent. It’s sad that we are losing this touch because some people can’t even put two sentences together.

I feel like as much as we want to claim more to the western culture we should not let go of our roots because our culture is what makes us Nigerians. Even the western world wants to tap into our culture because they enjoy what we can offer and it is evident in their music.”
