Instagram says Hushpuppi can continue using his account

Social media giant, Instagram has said suspected Nigerian fraudster, Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi can continue using his account.

Hushpuppi is currently on trial for fraud in the United States.

Instagram responded to an inquiry from Dubai-based publication, The National, and stated that the Hushpuppi is free to continue using his social media account since he did not violate the social media platform’s laws.

The cyber-fraud suspect lived a luxurious lifestyle in Dubai but was arrested in June last year following his involvement in a multi-million dollar money laundering scheme.

Instagram, however, said Huspuppi will be free to continue to use the site unless US law enforcement directs otherwise.

The American social media company said it is enforcing a policy on inmate takedown requests in place for prisoners active on social media. Abbas does not fall under the categories which would validate account removal.

Instagram said accounts are only usually closed if they represent dangerous organisations or individuals.

While Hushpuppi is yet to post on Instagram since June 2020, he has pleaded guilty to his crimes as revealed in court documents from April 2021.

According to Court documents in July 2021, Hushpuppi played a major role in a school finance scam, as well as several other cyber and business email compromise schemes that cumulatively caused more than $24 million in losses.
