I’m the new Fela, says Portable

Highly controversial street-hop artiste, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has declared himself a regen of the late Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

The Zazuu star made the declaration during the latest episode of the comedian Bae U’s podcast, Curiosity Made Me Ask, where he noted that his fans gave him the title “newborn Fela” and he reckoned with it.

Portable new Fela

Portable said: “I didn’t give myself the title, ‘Newborn Fela.’ My fans gave it to me. You know I have a lot of fans, my fans brought me to this point. “Normally, you have to be bold, a lion don’t fear to walk alone.”

To those still calling him an up-and-coming musician, the singer said there is no superstar that is currently bigger than him in Nigeria.

He said; “Which superstar do you know that is bigger than me in Nigeria? I am the one they are talking about now: musician that is trending. My talk is trending, my slangs are trending, my movement is trending, my dressing is trending.

“Last year, I was upcoming this year, I am also upcoming. I will be up and coming everyday. Coming with new glory everyday. Newborn Fela. Every year is my year.”

Meanwhile, in similar news…

Nigerian On Air Personality, Daddy Freeze has said music superstar, Wizkid is almost on the same level with late Afrobeats legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

It may be recalled that during an interview with 10 magazine the “Essence” crooner said rap is dead while arguing in favour of Afrobeats dominating the Hip Hop genre.

Subsequently, Wizkid received backlash mostly from Nigerian rap artistes who either responded to him online or released diss raps.

In reaction to the clash, Freeze opined that for Wizkid to have made that comment, it comes from a place of objectivity soaked in experience.

He said the Ojuelegba crooner has achieved a lot and should be taken seriously whenever he gives constructive criticisms.

Daddy Freeze said; “When it comes to music in Nigeria as a whole, Wizkid is almost on the level of Fela then. What he (Wizkid) has been able to do, not many people can achieve it, when he says something, hear him out, there is one thing in me that makes me different from many people I might not like you but if you speak the truth I will support you…

The truth is the truth and it will set you free. When you see the truth and started ignoring the truth because of the person carrying the truth we become like Nigerian politicians, all of them are the same but they will make one look worse than the rest of them.”
