I was ‘robbed’ of CAF African Player of the Year Award – Mikel in reflective lamentation

Former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has claimed he was robbed of the CAF African Player of the Year Award in 2013.

Mikel recently appeared as a guest on the Obi One podcast and he reflected on how he played a pivotal role as the Chelsea won the UEFA Europa League.

The former midfielder for The Blues argued that the trophy was his to win, but he was cheated and they awarded it to Yaya Toure.

He noted that he won more than Toure during the year in review, and CAF told him he would win the African Player of the Year award, but something else happened.

Mikel said; “In 2013, it was my trophy (CAF Award) to be won. I won the Africa Cup of Nations, I won the Champions League, the year before and the Europa League the year 2013.

“And Yaya only won… he didn’t win anything and coming into the ceremony, I thought I was winning, the information was that I was going to win it, I was told by CAF I was going to win it”.

In another news…

CorrectNG recalls how the Super Eagles legend, Mikel bragged that he is “still the most successful and decorated football player in Nigeria”.

He said despite all his achievements he never got got an opportunity to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or like Nigerian youngster, Victor Osimhen, who was ranked number 8 in the world.

The 36-year-old who appeared as a guest on The Obi One podcast, alongside Osimhen, however, congratulated the Napoli striker, for raising the bar high for Nigerian footballers.

He said, “I am still the most successful and decorated football player in Nigeria. But he [Victor Osimhen] got an award that I never got. He was ranked number 8 in the world by Ballon d’Or. That’s absolutely amazing. I must say congratulations. The season you had, it was fantastic and I never got to that stage. You’ve raised the bar so high.”
