I spent months in a Ghanaian jail after Kashy Godson’s death – Barry Jhay recounts ordeal

Nigerian singer, Bary Jhay has recounted his experience in Ghana following the death of his manager, Kashy Godson in 2021.

There was controversy surrounding the manager’s demise as people accused Barry of having a hand because they had a fight before the incident.

The musician was consequently arrested by the Ghanaian police while investigations were ongoing, and though the cause of Kashy’s death was unknown, there were claims that the record label founder committed suicide.

In a recent interview on the Echo Room, Barry Jhay said he had to stay away from music for a while as the event left him traumatized.

The ‘Aiye’ singer said he was held in detention for a month and two weeks, but he added that he was not arrested as a suspect.

Jhay explained that the authorities felt the need to detain him for protection from those that may have planned to harm him over the incident.

He said; “I had to stay away from music, it caused me PTSD. I was not arrested because I was a suspect, they arrested and kept me because they thought some people were going to do something crazy to me.”

In related news, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, (ICPC) arrested popular singer, Oladapo Oyebanji, aka D’Banj last year.

It may be recalled that the award-winning musician was detained by the ICPC on Tuesday, December 6, 2022.

It was gathered that operatives of the commission closed in on D’Banj and he was left with no choice than to surrender himself at its headquarters in Abuja.

The media executive is alleged to have diverted thousands of naira earmarked by the federal government for N-Power project, an empowerment programme set up in 2016 to address youth unemployment.

Sources said the self-styled ‘Koko Master’ had refused to honour summons for weeks, and claimed that he was overseas due to scheduled concerts each time he was invited to appear for interrogation over fraud allegation.

According to Investigators, D’Banj and some government officials colluded to introduce ghost beneficiaries into the payroll of N-Power.

They said the stipend meant for the ghost beneficiaries of the scheme are then redirected to accounts that have now allegedly been linked to the singer.

Following D’Banj’s failure to show up for interrogation despite multiple invitations, the ICPC launched a manhunt for him with the intention of apprehending the pop star either in Nigeria or abroad. This forced the musician to make himself available at the agency’s head office in the Federal Capital Territory.
