Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, on Saturday opened up on her ancestry, tracing a significant percentage of her roots to Nigeria.
She opened up about discovering that she is 43 percent Nigerian while speaking at Women in Leadership programme in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
Meghan who arrived Nigeria with her husband, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, referred to the African giant as “My country”.
The former Hollywood actress thanked Nigerians for welcoming her and the Prince to Nigeria as she disclosed that a DNA test recently revealed she is part Nigerian.
The Duchess told the audience: “I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you’ve all been in welcoming my husband and I to this country … my country.”
Meghan explained how she discovered her Nigerian heritage via a genealogy test, saying the first thing she did after the result was to call her mum, because she wanted to know if she was aware of that.
According to the mother-of-two that, visit to the country of over 200 millio people, has given her a better understanding of being a Nigerian
She said; “Never in a million years would I understand it as much as I do now. And what has been echoed so much in the past day is, ‘Oh, we are not so surprised when we found out you are Nigerian”.
