How Africanus Noel became the youngest commissioner in Nigeria at 14

14-year-old Africanus Noel set the record for being the youngest commissioner in Nigeria following his appointment by the Bayelsa state government in 2018.

Noel who was the overall winner of the Bayelsa state Essay Writing Competition was made a Child Commissioner for Education in the Ministry in Yenagoa, by the then state Governor, Hon Seriake Dickson.

He assumed office as a Child Education Commissioner as an SS1 student of the Ijaw National Academy, Kaiama.

Africanus Noel while acting as Child Commissioner for Education in the Ministry, described education as the foundation for any meaningful development, he identified lack of proper education and value orientation as the major cause for cultism, prostitution and other social vices in the country.

The then substantive Commissioner for Education, Hon Jonathan Obuebite introduced the Child Commissioner to government functionaries in his office.

Coordinator of the 2018 Essay Writing Competition, Mr. Michael Afenfia described the winners as excellent. He said they were selected by a crack team of impartial judges, using grammatical accuracy, diction, creativity, punctuation, knowledge of the subject matter among other criteria.
