Edo police arrest sergeant over viral video of him slapping woman

A Police Sergeant identified as Samuel Imakor has been arrested for slapping a young woman identified as Mercy Ajayi in Edo state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrest while speaking to journalists on Monday, in Benin City.

Nwabuzor said the officer attached to the Iruekpen Police Station was arrested on March 11, 2024 by the Divisional Police Officer, in charge of the area police and subsequently brought the suspect to the Commissioner of Police for debriefing.

According to him, the police were acting in response to a viral video released by Harrison Gwamnishu which showed a young woman getting slapped by an officer at the police station.

The command spokesperson added that the officer, upon interrogation, confessed to the commissioner of police that he actually slapped the young woman.

He added that Imakor defended his action by claiming that the young woman first slapped him in the vehicle while trying to arrest her.

Nwabuzor also said the sergeant disclosed that he was arresting the woman in connection with an alleged case of stealing human hair from a hotel department.

He also said that the Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, ordered for his arrest and the immediate disciplinary procedure, in light of the officer’s confession.
