Drama in court as housewife changes mind about divorcing husband of 27 years

An Abuja housewife stirred some mild drama in a Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court on Wednesday when she asked the court to disregard her earlier plea for divorce.

CorrectNG reported days ago that Sa’adatu Ayuba had approached the court to dissolve her 27-year-old marriage to Jalija on grounds of impotence.

She said she was 16 years old when she got married to Jalija in accordance with Islamic law in 1997 and the union was blessed with five children aged 25, 22, 14, 9 and 7.

“I got married since I was 16 years old, I have never been with any other man before my marriage. Since two years ago, I have been having misunderstandings with him because he got a girlfriend outside our marriage.

”He has not been functioning as a man, I am tired of the situation and his attitude and want a divorce in the interest of justice,” Sa’adatu had said.

But at the resumption of hearing today, January 17 2024, the woman made a U-turn and prayed the court not to approve the divorce anymore.

”My Lord, although my husband refused to follow the court order for him to perform his duties as a man, I still love him,” she said.

The courtroom erupted in laughter and murmurs when the husband said he is no longer interested in being with her, so he pleaded with the judge to make their separation official.

Jalija said; “My landlord gave us a quit notice, so she moved out of our home. I told her I wanted us to move from Dakwa because of transportation to my place of work, but she rented her own place and moved out on Dec.31.

“Since she told the court that I cannot perform my duties as her husband, the court should grant her request for divorce. I do not love her anymore”.

The judge, Saminu Suleiman ordered Jalija to take his wife to his residence, provide and cater for her based on his capabilities.

He also ordered the court bailiff to accompany the woman wife to the hubby’s residence to verify where he stays. Suleiman then adjourned the matter until January 26.
