Court sentences driver to 14 years in jail for attempted robbery

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja, has sentenced a 36-year-old driver, Sulaiman Olabode to 14 years in prison for attempted robbery.

Justice O.A. Ogala convicted Olabode on Monday, November 27 on an amended charge of attempted robbery following a plea bargain application.

The convict initially pleaded not guilty to a count of armed robbery during the first arraignment, but later opted for plea bargain agreement.

The prosecutor told the court that Olabode had attempted to rob one Adedeji Oluwaseun of his Nokia X Windows phone on September 18, 2016, at No. 34 Gbeleyi Street, Alakuko, Lagos State.

The prosecution counsel said the offence contravened Section 298(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Olabode, therefore, pleaded guilty to the amended charge.

Justice Ogala found the defandant guilty and sentenced him to 14 years, effective from October 28, 2016, the day of remand.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp E.O. Adaraloye, told the court that the convict committed the offence on February 28 at about 2:30 p.m. at No. 52, Plaza Junction, Sango-Ota. Adaraloye said the offences were in contravention of Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ogun, 2006.
