Court orders unconditional release of Emefiele from EFCC custody

The Federal Capital Territory High Court, on Thursday, ordered the immediate and unconditional release of Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Justice O.A. Adeniyi granted the release order after considering an ex-parte motion filed by Emefiele.

In the motion, the ex-CBN governor was seeking his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion.

The court order stipulates that the ex-CBN boss must be unconditionally released immediately by the 3rd and 4th respondents (the Executive Chairman and the EFCC).

Alternatively, they must present him in court on the scheduled date for the hearing of the substantive motion on notice, where he may be considered for bail by the court.

Emefiele named the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, and the EFCC itself as the respondents.

The court set the date for the hearing of the substantive motion on notice for Monday, November 6, 2023 at 1 p.m.
