Court grants Abba Kyari N150m bail after 18 months in prison

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari N50 million bail after 18 months in prison.

Justice James Omotosho granted him bail for refusing to escape the Kuje Prison when it was attacked on July 5, 2022.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA had filed 24-count charge against Kyari and his two brothers, Mohammed Baba Kyari and Ali Kyari over alleged money laundering and failure to declare assets.

Apart from money laundering, the former Head of the Rapid Response Team is also facing a primary charge of cocaine trafficking, for which he has been denied bail.

Omotosho ruled that the fact that Kyari and his accomplices refused to escape when the Prison was attacked, where about 90 percent of the inmates escaped, has proven that he is ready to face any allegations against him.

The judge further said all the allegations are bailable and he is not a flight risk.

Abba Kyari alongside some members of his team were taken into custody in February 2022 after the NDLEA alleged the tampering with drug exhibits.
