Bus driver allegedly sets traffic control officer on fire in Edo

A commercial bus driver is currently on the run after allegedly setting ablaze an official of the Edo State Traffic Control and Management Agency, EDSTMA, in Benin City.

Osaze Edigin made this known in a statement on Facebook, noting that the incident happened after the driver was stopped for violating traffic.

He said the uidentified man bought out a keg of petrol and doused the traffic officer before proceeding to set him on fire

According to the statement from the EDSTMA, the victim is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the state.

It reads: “The Management of Edo State Traffic Control and Management Agency (EDSTMA) hereby announces to the general public that a motorist driving a commercial bus with the registration number FFE145XA committed a traffic offence at Adesuwa Junction, Sapele Road, Benin City on Friday, 9th February 2023.

On apprehension, the bus driver angrily brought out fuel and set one of the officers ablaze. Currently, the officer is in an undisclosed hospital receiving treatment.”

In a video posted alongside the statement, a voiceover narrated how the perpetrator committed a traffic offence and was apprehended by officials of the Zone 2 Enforcement Team, but he refused to drive the bus to the EDSTMA base.
