Nigerian singer, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe better known as Ayra Starr, has tendered an apology for not greeting Iconic singer, King Sunny Ade respectfully.
She performed at the Afrozons pre-Grammy party in Lagos state on Friday night and just before she got up on stage, she paid respects to some VIPs, just as she reached King Ade, she gave him a handshake.
Ayra Starr’s action captured in a trending video elicited condemnation from Nigerians as they dragged her for disrespecting the Highlife and Juju star by not bowing to greet properly.
Upon being bombarded with comments and messages from angry fans, the Mavin Princess decided apologise through Twitter and clarified that she did not see King Sunny Ade’s face properly.
She explained that she is not one to be disrespectful as a proper Yoruba girl, the fact of the matter was not fully shown in the short clip.
Ayra Starr also apologised directly to the music legend whom she referred to as an uncle, but people also condemned her for using uncle instead of ‘daddy’ or ‘grandpa’.
She wrote; “I’m so sorry, I had just walked in and all the lights and nerves didn’t let me see but i came back around to greet everyone properly, I have never been that girl to be disrespectful, I’m a proper Yoruba girlllll and the video didn’t start until after I’d greeted Burna’s mom ! I’m very sorry to the legend, uncle and King Sunny Ade”

A tweep @47kasz wrote; After not greeting king sunny ade properly Ayra Starr still came on twitter to call him “uncle”. Copying black America culture is too funny.. that’s daddy or grandpa!! 21yr and calling 77yrs old man uncle.
@Oladapomikky1; Ayra Starr with King Sunny Ade. Wizkid with King Sunny Ade while on Stage together. It’s high time we cancel her for disrespecting an icon like King Sunny Ade.
@_AsiwajuLerry; The fact that Ayra Starr is a Yoruba girl makes this quite disrespectful no matter how you spin it. She must not go on her knees but a simple knee gesture would do. The man even bowed his head out of respect for the person he’s shaking and she was there standing like a shigidi.
