Angolan police open fire on youths protesting against poverty

Angolan police on Wednesday, fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse youths protesting in Luanda, the nation’s capital.

The protesters were accused of defying the ban on demonstrations which was ordered by the governor of Luanda, partly to slow down the spread of COVID-19.

Local media reports that the alarming cases of poverty spurred the protest which saw citizens challenging rising living costs, unemployment and the postponement of local elections due to Covid-19.

Back in October, dozens of Angolans were arrested during a similar protest.

Angola is one of Africa’s biggest oil exporters but most of its people live in poverty.
