Alleged abduction of popular cleric, Mohammadu Buhari causes panic in Ilorin

Residents of Ilorin, Kwara State were thrown into panic in the early hours of Friday, January 13 following the rumoured abduction of a popular Islamic Cleric named Mohammadu Buhari Jamiu.

A viral footage with the inscription ‘Buhari Omo Musa’ in the background claimed he was abducted at his residence in Ilorin on Friday morning.

In the video clip, a woman’s voice believed to be that of the alleged abducted preacher’s wife could be heard in the background.

She was pleading for assistance from the public to enable the family raise the N5 million ransom demanded by the unknown kidnappers.

A man whose voice was also heard in the background gave the impression that the kidnappers demanded N30 million ransom but it was reduced to N5 million after negotiations.

The rumoured abduction caused fear and confusion amongst followers of the cleric also known as Buhari Omomusa as they prayed for his safe release from the abductors.

In reaction to the development, Buhari Omomusa debunked the report via a radio station, saying he is safe and was not kidnapped at any point.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the state Police Command, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, also dismissed the reports and described the video clip as fake.

He explained that it was a different person named Tunde Buhari that was abducted and he has since been rescued.

He said; “The Alhaji Tunde Buhari that was kidnapped in Oluwalose Community in Oko-Olowo area of Ilorin, had been rescued and made public.

“Even the second victim kidnapped alongside Tunde Buhari has also been rescued.”
