AFCON: Two countries qualify for knockout stage

Cape Verde and Senegal have qualified for the Round of 16 at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Cape Verde thrashed Mozambique 3-0 earlier in the day to progress into the knockout rounds. While Senegal became the second country to book their spot following a 3-1 victory over Cameroon.

The Teranga Lions went two goals up thanks to Ismaila Sarr and Habib Diallo. Jean-Charles Castelletto pulled one back in the 83rd minute, but Sadio Mane drilled in a low shot past Andre Onana to seal the win.

Following Friday’s fixtures, both countries are the only teams to have won their first two matches at this tournament.

Super Eagles star forward, Osimhen has said he may be done if Nigeria wins the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, (AFCON) trophy.

He won the Serie A title with Napoli and finished 2023 as the CAF African Footballer of the Year. Osimhen also finished eighth in the Ballon d’Or rankings. However, the 25-year-old feels lifting the Cup of Nations with Nigeria might just top the lot.

The 25-year-old Napoli striker admitted to AFP that it would be a dream come true to win the AFCON trophy with Super Eagles.

Osimhen said; “It would be one of the best moments of my life. I have done that with Napoli; I have made history, but no matter what I do, no matter how many goals I have scored, to be able to win the AFCON, I would go a long way in my life but probably when I do that, I am done. I am really looking forward to winning something with the Super Eagles.”

“I have aimed high all my life, while growing up, and this pressure comes naturally. I am the kind of person who doesn’t fold under pressure. As the pressure comes I take it into my head to try to give my best and do well for myself.

“So far so good, I have been doing well for my club and country, which I feel like is the most important thing. To win the African player of the year is just the dream of every young African player. For me to have won it shows the kind of things I have put in, the hard work, the sweat, the tears. For me it is really a dream come true,” he added.
