AFCON: Super Eagles defeat host Cote d’Ivoire

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have defeated host nation Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 to brighten their chances of qualifying for knockout stage at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria and the Elephant failed to score in the first half in the game played on Thursday, January 18 at the Olympic Stadium in Ebimpé.

But captain, William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty in the 55th minute of the game to give the Eagles the much deserved win.

The result moved Peseiro’s side to second position in Group A with four points from two games. Cote d’Ivoire are in third position with 3 points from the same number of games.

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea are on top of the group with goals difference ahead of Nigeria, while Guinea-Bissau are in fourth position with no point. Nigeria will now face Guinea-Bissau in their last group game in the coming days.
