Former Chelsea star, John Mikel Obi, has revealed that the former owner of the club, Roman Abramovich wanted to save his father during his abduction ordeal.
Mikel recounted getting news that his father was kidnapped in 2018 when he was playing at the World Cup and the billionaire offered to send operatives to rescue him from kidnappers’ den in Nigeria.
The Nigeria international shared the experience with talkSPORT while talking about how supportive Chelsea was at the time.
Mikel Obi said; “My dad got kidnapped while I was playing at the World Cup 2018 in Russia, Chelsea were very supportive.
“I remember Roman Abramovich saying, ‘Do you want me to send people over? Because I know if I send people over, I can get your dad out’.
“I was like, ‘How are you going to do this?’ He said ‘Don’t worry about that. Just let me, if you want that option, I can do it.’ I can relate to Luis Diaz and what he’s going through”.
The former Super Eagles captain played for Chelsea from 2006 to 2017.
