Abians expect you to run better and cleaner governance – Okonjo-Iweala tells Alex Otti

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation and Nigeria’s former minister of finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has charged Abia Governor-elect, Alex Otti, to run clean and transparent governance.

She gave the charge while delivering a speech virtually at the inauguration of the 100-member 2023 Abia Transition Council in Aba, Abia’s economic hub.

Okonjo-Iweala said the incoming government should focus on “disruptive strategies rather than traditional operational systems”.

The WTO boss also urged Otti to run a government that should be exemplary and transparent.

Speaking further, she asked Abians in diaspora who have the capacity to assist in infrastructure development, and economic recovery, to return and contibute their quota.

She advised the governor-elect to come up with innovative ways to make Abia function in line with the modern world.

Okonjo-Iweala expressed the hope that Otti will use the unique chance he has been given to set Abia on the right side of development and modernisation through disruptive digital technology.

She said partly:“I told the governor-elect that everything we will do would depend on this governance. Nigerians, especially from that side of the South-East, have lost faith in governance.

“They no longer believe the government can provide anything for them. They provide for themselves boreholes, electricity and every other thing for themselves.

“Although that is entrepreneurial, on the other hand, that is not how to run the place”.
