Abba Kyari finally released 27 months after incarceration

Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari has been released from the Kuje Correctional Facility in the Federal Capital Territory.

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on May 22, granted Kyari two weeks bail to enable him bury his mother who died on May 5, 2024.

The former Commander of Force Intelligence Response Team, Abba had spent 27 months behind bars and in 2023 he was granted N50 million bail.

Spokesperson of the FCT Command of the NCoS, Adamu Duza in a statement on Friday, said the once dubbed ‘Super Cop’ was released after meeting his bail conditions.

Duza said; “DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions, and has since been released today, [Friday, May 31, 2024].”

Kyari was arreted in February 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for his alleged involvement with an international drug trafficking operation.

The embattled police officer, along with four members of the Police IRT which he headed, namely; Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu, was arraigned on March 7, 2022.

Two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, who were arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, in connection with the case were also charged.

But, while Kyari and the IRT members pleaded not guilty, Umeibe and Ezenwanne pleaded guilty and were convicted.
