8 Natural tips for hair growth

Stunted growth of hairs do result from hair shrinkage, poor hair habits that can lead to breakage, genetics, lack of moisture. It could also be due to poor diet and lack of exercise! Below are tips that will help your hair to grow to the length that you desire.

1. Coconut oil

Coconut oil has been used to improve the health and luster of hair for years. This is due to its ability to reduce the loss of protein from damaged hair. Coconut Oil can penetrate the hair shaft and decrease hair loss, this helps to reverse the effect of harsh chemical products.

Method: Take 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your palm and massage it into your scalp. You can leave it on for about an hour and then wash it off thoroughly using a mild cleanser or shampoo. If you have a dry hair you might not need to wash it off.  Do this at least two times in a week.

2. Yogurt

Yogurt serves as a rich source of probiotics and this helps to promote robust hair growth and prevent damage to hair.

Method: Just have a serving of yogurt once daily.

3. Onion juice

Researches have shown that the phytochemical compounds contained in onion juice can help induce hair regrowth and that it may be an efficient treatment for bald head. Onion juice is also thought to improve circulation.

Method:  Blend a few onions and extract the juice. Apply the juice to your scalp and hair and leave in for at least 30 minutes. Then shampoo normally. Do this routine twice a week.

4. Massage

Massaging the scalp can help to restore hair growth and can be used in conjunction with hair oils and masks. This stimulates the scalp and can improve hair thickness. It’s thought that stretching forces during the massage encourage hair growth and thickness in the dermal papilla cells. Taking the time to massage your scalp each day can also help you relieve stress and tension.

5. Aloe vera

Aloe vera has long been used for treating hair loss. It also soothes the scalp and conditions hair. It can reduce dandruff and unblock hair follicles that may be blocked by excess oil.

Method:  Apply pure aloe vera gel to your scalp and hair a few times per week. You can also use shampoo and conditioner that contain aloe vera.

6. Hibiscus

Extracts of hibiscus leaves and flowers have been found to promote the growth of hair . Thus, they may have the potential to reverse the effects of excessive hair fall in humans.

Method: Grind a couple of hibiscus flowers and a handful of leaves to make a paste. Mix it with coconut oil. Apply this hair mask and leave it on for an hour. Wash it off with shampoo. Do this once a week.

7. Fenugreek

Fenugreek is called eru in yoruba while hausa people call it kimba. It contains bioactive compounds that may promote the growth of healthy hair. A  study found that fenugreek could significantly reduce hair loss and promote new hair growth.  Some people are known to be allergic to legumes such as peanuts if you are among this group do not use it as they all belong to the Fabaceae family.

Method: Soak a quarter cup of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Grind the seeds into a paste and apply it as a hair mask. Leave it on for 30-45 minutes before rinsing it off with plain water. Do this routine once a week.

8. Coffee

Caffeine is a major component of coffee. Research shows that caffeine can promote the elongation of the hair shaft and stimulate hair growth by prolonging the anagen phase. This can reduce the balding and thinning of hair.

Method: Make a cup of coffee and have it at least once a day. Do not consume excess coffee due to its high caffeine content.

Diet that promotes hair growth

  • Consume fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. A study conducted in France has found that supplementing your diet with omega-3 and 6 fatty acids can improve hair density and fight hair loss.
  • Berries and other citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Studies suggest that such foods can promote hair growth.
  • Green leafy vegetables like spinach contain nutrients that can aid hair growth.
  • Nuts and seeds are packed with nutrients that can help control hair fall.
