Man allegedly machetes girlfriend for failing to visit him on Valentine’s Day

A 30-year-old man, Amber Ubung, has been arrested for allegedly macheting his lover because she failed to show up at his house during the recent Valentine’s Day.

The Cross River State Police Command paraded the suspect before the press in Calabar, and disclosed that the incident happened at Okuni in Ikom Local Government Area.

State Commissioner of Police, Mr Gyogon Grimah, claimed that Ubung carried out the act when his 25-year-old girlfriend, Blessing Onawu, failed to keep her promise to spend the Valentine night with him after collecting money.

Grimah said the accused man sent N7,000 to his girlfriend for her to do her hair, ahead of February 14, but when the day came, she never visited him.

He also said that the victim’s mother intervened and in the process, Ubung also hit her with the matchet, thereby inflicting injuries on mother and daughter.

The commissioner said; “After waiting and the said lady did not show up, the suspect, Ubung, armed himself with a machete, went to the house of Onawu, attacked and gave her several machete cuts all over her body with the intent to kill her.

“In an attempt by the victim’s mother to rescue her, he used the same machete to inflict injuries on her. A team of police men were mobilised to the scene, and the suspect was arrested with the machete.

“The suspect was transferred to SCID for further investigation and will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded”.

According to the police commissioner, the victim and her mother were receiving treatment in different hospitals.
