Some hoodlums have allegedly kidnapped a corpse and family members conveying the remains of a deceased to his country home in Enugu state.
According to Sahara Reporters, the remains of late Mr Ugwuanyi Israel was being transported from Lagos state to Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu.
Sources disclosed that the kidnappers reached out to the family of the dead man and demanded a ransom of N50 million to release the body.
The armed kidnappers were said to have swooped in on the hearse conveying the corpse and took the family members along with the body.
A family member was quoted; “His corpse was on its way from Lagos yesterday (Sunday) when the vehicle conveying his body was halted by kidnappers and people in the vehicle alongside the driver were all kidnapped at Umuoka Udi LGA of Enugu State. The kidnappers have called the family and demanded a N50 million ransom.”
Also, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof Chidi Odinkalu, shared the report via his Twitter (X) handle on Monday.
He wrote; “Israel Ugwuanyi died in Lagos. Yesterday, family members were conveying his remains to Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in Nsukka LGA of Enugu State in SE Nigeria when kidnappers andicted them & his dead body. They are demanding N50m in ransom.”
However, the Enugu State Police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe said he was not aware of the incident and there was no such information before the command.
