How I rose from cage dancing to TV star – Denrele Edun

Controversial Nigerian media personality, Denrele Edun has revealed that he used to be a cage dancer before hitting fame.

The TV and event anchor made this known during an interview on Arise News TV while talking about his media journey. Denrele recalled his days dancing at late Fela’s infamous Afrikan Shrine, where he hustled to make ends meet studying at the University of Lagos.

According to the crossdresser, he worked as a backup dancer for the Afrikan Shrine on weekends and also performed with the Iroko band.

Reflecting struggles and growth, he said May 21, 2024 would mark his third decade in the entertainment industry, noting that his professional sojourn in the industry dates back to 1994.

Denrele said; “I used to dance in the shrine. I used to be in the cage, yes, I used to be one of the cage dancers. I did everything to hustle at that time. And I was still in Unilag at that time. So I was a backup dancer every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Afrikan Shrine and I was a cage dancer.

Also, I used to dance for the Iroko band which was headlined by Dr Ola Balogun, one of the pioneers of filmmaking. Come May 21st I will be marking 3 decades in the Entertainment Industry. I started professionally in 1994, on a TV soap opera. My first paycheck was N150”.

Afrobeats singer, Abbey Toyyib Elias, known professionally as Skiibii, has revealed that budding artiste, Asake, used to be his dancer.

He revealed that before Asake’s career skyrocketed, they used to go for shows together and the ‘Yoga’ crooner would be dancing while he sings.

Skiibii made this known while featuring as a guest on a recent episode of the Afrobeats podcast hosted by media personality, Adesope Olajide.

The ‘Sensima’ singer also revealed that he accommodated the ‘Amapiano’ crooner during the early days of his career.

According to him, many people do not know that Asake is a great dancer and that he was a theatre performer while studying at Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ife, Osun State.

He said; “I was discussing with someone the other day, he was saying ‘Asake just blew up now, he just entered the star mode.’

“Asake used to travel with me to shows. Asake used to stay with me, travel with me to shows and all that. When this guy blew like this, he just entered… I was like, una never see anything, the Asake wey me I know, una never see anything.

“Asake went to [Obafemi Awolowo University] Ife. He can dance. See, that year ehn, if I show you videos on my phone, Asake can dance when he is on stage. That time I just dropped ‘Sensima’ he dey follow me go everywhere na.”
